6 things we want to see between now and the end of the season

Updated: 1 day ago

We are currently basking in the afterglow of a big midweek win but there’s no denying it’s been another disappointing campaign and most of us can’t wait until it’s finally over.

However, we still have eight games to go and plenty of work to do, so here’s what I want to see before the final whistle in May.

1: A time machine

A DeLorean from Back to the Future would be very handy right now to fast forward everyone to the end of the season or even better to the start of pre-season games in the summer.

How I’d love to avoid having to watch Posh getting battered at Luton, or at home against Cardiff.

I think we’ve more of a chance of capturing lightning than winning those games with our current fitness issues.

2: Staying up (and finishing as high as possible)

Tuesday’s win means we are nearly there but the most important thing we need to do between now and the start of May is confirm our place in League One for next season.

In those early giddy months of the Luke Williams reign we were riding high in the form table and dreaming of a spring push into the play-offs.

But a woeful run of form – with just 20 points out of a possible 45 this year – has seen those dreams transformed back into a slightly less terrifying version of our early season nightmare.

We sit in 13th spot, eight points above the relegation zone, nervously looking over our shoulders.

Between now and the end of the season, we need the wins and points to lift us out of the doldrums and hopefully towards a single digit finishing position.

Ending the campaign in 8th or 9th presents us as a much better proposition for any players mulling over a summer move to PE2 than finishing 16th or 17th.

It also makes everyone feel a whole lot better.

3: Some ‘keep me’ performances from fringe players

To do that we need some of the players who are effectively playing for their future to step up and grasp any opportunities that come their way.

The likes of Declan Frith and Cian Hayes spring to mind. They need to look at the impact Kyrell Lisbie has made on the other side of the pitch to spur them on.

Brandon Khela needs to nail down his midfield place before Ben Woods comes back for it.

A string of good performances from any of them could make a big difference to where they start next season.

Listen as the hosts talk about our young players contributing to a thumping win over Rotherham.

4: More opportunities for Sykut and his mates

Patryk Sykut and some of the key members of our younger teams should also be licking their lips at the prospect of more game time over the next few weeks.

Once we are (hopefully) safe from the drop, Luke Williams may be willing to give those players further minutes, and an opportunity to stake a claim for a place in next season’s squad.

Lucca Mendonca was fantastic in the game at Stevenage and deserves to see more action if there’s nothing to play for (and not because we’ve run out of fit first team players) while David Kamara will be buzzing after his two goals from the penalty spot against Rotherham.

5: No more injuries

The end of Darren Ferguson’s managerial career at London Road and the arrival of Luke Williams aside, this season is not going to be remembered for much.

Apart from the number of injuries we have seen this season.

This is not the time or place for an inquest (that needs to happen at the end of the season), but too many players have missed way too many games.

We still haven’t seen Sam Hughes or Rio Adebisi kick a ball in anger, while Hayes, Frith, Woods, Harley Mills, Jacob Mendy, George Nevett, Matt Garbett and Tom O’Connor have all missed big chucks of the campaign.

That’s before we get to 35-year-old Tom Lees’ injury in a pre-match warmup...

I don’t know how – given our track record – but we really could do with NO MORE INJURIES between now and May 2nd.

We’re in danger of calling up the Under 18s as it is.

6: Players returning to fitness

Setback has become a huge part of the club’s vocabulary this season. Time after time there’s news of a delayed return for one of our injured players.

So, it’s with my fingers firmly crossed that I say I hope to see some of those mentioned above back before the end of the season – as well as Harry Leonard after his hernia op.

It’s also important for those players’ careers. Matt Garbett won’t want to arrive at the World Cup without a good stretch of games, while any further delay to Sam Hughes could raise doubts over his future.

Over to you

What do you want to see as we limp towards the end of the season?

Are you happy for the team to be on the beach and prepare for next season, or do you want to see Posh battle for every point before that last game in May?
