Kwame Poku Signs for QPR: What Can They Expect and What Does This Mean for Peterborough United?

Fabrizio Romano has announced today that Peterborough United and Queens Park Rangers have agreed a deal for Kwame Poku. Poku has signed a contract and becomes QPR’s newest recruit, the fee is rumoured to be around £900,000 plus add-ons.

So, what can Queens Park Rangers fans expect from Kwame Poku? Without his injury, Poku might have enjoyed an even better campaign than the impressive one he had. There’s no question that he’s ready for the next step, and QPR fans have a future superstar on their hands.

Strengths

Poku’s best position is on the right wing, but he’s versatile enough to play on both flanks and in the number 10 role. What makes Poku special is his ability to beat a man and produce game-changing moments that shift momentum in his team’s favour. On numerous occasions this season, we Posh fans have seen his trademark ball-roll — a move that allows him to fake out defenders and buy time to decide where to deliver the ball.

His decision-making and composure are excellent, making him a very well-rounded attacking player. Poku was named in the League One Team of the Season, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists in 27 league appearances. He also played a crucial role in helping his team win a trophy on a big stage, drawing a foul from three Birmingham City defenders that led to a stunning free-kick goal by Harley Mills. Few defences in the league were able to contain him. He has developed a ruthless edge that will only continue to grow as he progresses.

Weaknesses

However, Poku struggled to return to his explosive form after being sidelined for a prolonged period with a nasty hamstring injury. His acceleration on the ball noticeably declined, and he found it difficult to get into the scoring positions he once reached with ease. This appeared to be a confidence issue, possibly stemming from what was reportedly a major surgery. A full pre-season and the opportunity to rebuild trust in his hamstring should help him return to the top of his game.

Opinion

This move is fantastic for both parties. QPR are getting a player who, in my opinion, can reach the very top of the game. He was arguably the best player in the league before his injury, and at only 23 years old, he has plenty of room to grow under the right coaching and development.

For Peterborough, Poku’s move to a Championship club ensures a fee is received — reportedly agreed upon to avoid going to a tribunal. That money will roll over into the next campaign, giving the club a solid financial boost to continue their work in the transfer window. It allows them to strengthen a squad that lacked depth during a very disappointing season.
