My transfer picks

Peterborough United are not in for an exciting January.

With a massive squad and the need to get rid of some poor players before we can get anyone in, this will not be a month of overhaul.

I feel that there are two key positions that Posh lack depth in, and have suggested a few options, both short and long term.

I have seen people say that Posh need another midfielder, however I think we are already stacked enough in that position.

I have gone for loan left backs, as Harley Mills is potentially missing the rest of the season, Rio Adebisi is in the abyss, and Jacob Mendy is not very good.

Although Carl Johnston has done a creditable job at left back, we need to restore balance to the team by having a left footed player in that position.

I have also found some wingers that I think could do well for us. Kyrell Lisbie is developing well, but we do need some competition/cover for him.

My winger targets are quite optimistic, however they do all possess the quality to have an instant impact, provide a great source of learning for Lisbie, and send us up the table.

Left back

Finley Munroe

Deal: Loan

Age: 20

Club: Aston Villa

Position: Left-footed left back

We have missed attacking impetus on the left hand side since Mills’ injury, and Munroe would certainly provide that.

He spent the first half of the season on loan at Swindon, where his standout performances and eight goal contributions have been key to them sitting second in League Two.

Harley Mills came from the Villa academy originally, so there is a likeness there.

His playing style is aggressive, putting crosses into the box and joining attacks at every opportunity.

The defensive side of his game is where I have my question marks, as he has been playing as a wingback for Swindon. However, if we want to add some balance, and undoubted attacking quality to our left-hand side, Munroe could be a good signing.

Amidst rumours that Aston Villa are looking to recall him and send him higher up the pyramid, an optimistic Posh could be a good place for him to continue his development.

Jodi Jones

Deal: Permanent

Age: 28

Club: Notts County

Position: Left-sided whatever he wants

This is a ridiculously attacking left-back, I must say.

However, Luke Williams utilised Jodi Jones as a left wingback before, so he could look to do it again.

Jones is a player that has abundant quality. In League Two 2023/24, he got an incredible 24 assists. His deliveries into the box, and passing range in general, are an absolute joke.

There is an issue, and that is the defensive side of his game. Jones has only played in a back four a handful of times, and that was usually due to lack of personnel rather than tactics. He can be caught off guard defensively at times too.

This would be a risky signing, there is no doubt in that, however if he could do his defensive duties solidly, the attacking qualities he would bring would undoubtedly push Posh up the table.

Wingers

Louie Barry

Age: 22

Deal: Loan

Club: Aston Villa

Position: Right-footed left winger

Everyone who has been following the EFL in recent years knows who Louie Barry is. He is a player with an immense technical quality, often a game changer all on his own. He spent the first half of the season on loan at Sheffield United, however has struggled to find game time, and more recently has been recovering from a knee injury.

He is expected to be loaned back out, with another League One move potentially on the cards, and I think that pretty much every team in the league will be in for him.

He scored 16 goals in the first half of last season for Stockport in League One, and so will be almost guaranteed to make an instant impact.

He will provide tough competition for Lisbie, hopefully elevating his game too. If he is available, Posh should try to get him as he could be the key point of difference between play-offs and mid-table.

Corey Blackett-Taylor

Age: 28

Deal: Loan

Club: Derby County

Position: Right-footed left winger

Blackett-Taylor is a player that Derby may look to ship out this January. They have a plethora of attacking options, and he is not getting on the pitch most weeks in the Championship.

He has League One calibre, having his best spell at Charlton in the first half of 2023/24. His age profile doesn’t exactly match what Posh have signed on permanent deals in recent years, however he will likely be available on loan.

Blackett-Taylor is a direct winger, who looks to beat his man, and has a good end product. He does seem to me like an older, more finished article of Lisbie, which could help Kyrell’s development massively to be able to see where he can improve. Blackett-Taylor would be healthy competition in that position.

Kyreece Lisbie

Age: 22

Deal: Permanent

Club: Colchester United

Position: Versatile right-footed winger

There is no competition quite like sibling rivalry, and if we are looking for someone to challenge Kyrell Lisbie, who better than the man who he grew up eating breakfast with!

To be honest, I’m not sure how I feel about having two brothers play for the same club. It will either be a recipe for disaster, or the greatest thing to ever happen to us.

Ignoring familial ties for a moment, I think I would have suggested Kyreece Lisbie for this list anyway. He has been flying in League Two this season, with nine goals and four assists in 16 starts.

There have been a few quality players who started at Colchester, ended up at Posh and have now had good careers.

Kyreece Lisbie is a raw talent, much like his brother, however he does appear further down the line in developing the end product side of his game.

It won’t be a cheap deal for Posh to do, however I do think Lisbie would be a great option for us to look at.
