Two days to save the season | Why Posh are in dire straits

Warning: written within an hour of full time at Exeter, so this may not be pleasant reading.

Defeated.

That’s how many Posh fans feel right now.

We have just watched a distinctly average Exeter rip our team to shreds. They went down without a fight.

With the transfer deadline less than 48 hours away, it feels like now or never for Posh.

Relegation no longer feels like a threat, it feels nailed on unless something changes drastically soon.

How have we got here?

If I had a pound for every time I’ve been asked ‘what on earth has happened to Posh?’ by a random football fan, I would be able to reimburse the 350+ Posh fans who wasted their money by travelling hundreds of miles to watch their team today.

We used to be the entertainers, one of League One’s most feared opponents, known for attacking prowess and quick football.

Just two seasons ago, we were treated to Ephron Mason-Clark, Kwame Poku and Ricky-Jade Jones tearing into teams like Exeter with ease.

Players leave Posh, that is inevitable. We are a selling club, however the mismanagement of the replacement of these star players has been unforgivable.

Take Abraham Odoh, he is unfit to even lace the boots of EMC, let alone be a credible replacement.

Gustav Lindgren is ineffectual in every facet of the game, and looks like he could play for 90 hours without scoring.

We have fallen so far, and are now sleep-walking into relegation.

So… Is this salvageable?

The good news is that the transfer window remains open, and Posh are reportedly active within it.

I will never believe that it was acceptable for us to start the season with the squad that we did, however if we can add some vital additions in the final days, we may save ourselves.

The attack has to be of the utmost priority. We possess no threat going forward, which makes it so easy for teams to attack us knowing we are entirely toothless.

Both Gustav Lindgren and Bradley Ihionvien are not good enough to lead the line for us, that is a simple fact. Neither have managed to muster a goal in open play in a competitive match this season which speaks for itself.

Posh are reported to be interested in Blackburn Rovers’ Harry Leonard which seems a good signing. We have to get that deal, or another deal, over the line for someone who knows where the net is.

Since 2023/24, Posh have played a fantastic brand of football based around the quality of wide attacking players that we have had.

The wingers get the ball so much in Ferguson’s system, and they are arguably the most important players on the pitch.

Declan Frith has shown potential, as has Cian Hayes, and I am confident in those two that we are okay on the right side.

However, I have significant concerns about Kyrell Lisbie and Abraham Odoh. Lisbie is raw, he has shown potential but is nowhere near ready to start. Odoh doesn’t deserve words.

We simply must get a new winger in, otherwise the attack will continue to break down every time the ball ends up on the left for the foreseeable future.

Make or break

It truly is make or break. If Posh can add two quality attackers then they may just be okay, however without these two vital additions, I fear the result of this season is inevitable.

Darren Ferguson was straight down the tunnel following the defeat to Exeter, hopefully to phone up club chairman Darragh MacAnthony, and beg for reinforcements.

Posh are in dire straits, and signings are no longer an option, they are an absolute essential.

Fair comments , personally I think its the obsession / system with wingers that is now the problem , we never try & play centrally & are so easy to read for the opposition & then give the fact we can't defend from dead ball or crosses into our box under any of Fergie's tenures , here lies the problem but , who would we get in , Steve Evans probably, he'd be very unpopular, a Under 21 Prem Coach would be my choice as Fergie seems to have lost the dressing room over last 18 months .

Agree with this, even if we do sign a forward he will still need someone to get the ball to him, fair play to everyone who travelled yesterday, it would have been nice for the manager to acknowledge them rather as he always does when we lose disappear down the tunnel.

At what point is it the manager and not the players? Not advocating a change but we have tried everything else and still declining

I agree with 90% of what you've said, but have to disagree on your opinion of Cian Hayes. I think he's had enough chances and it's clear he isn't good enough
